Did you know that every January 10th is celebrated as National Houseplant Appreciation Day?
It’s the perfect time to show some love to our leafy friends and bring a touch of nature indoors!
Origins of National Houseplant Appreciation Day:
National Houseplant Appreciation Day originated from a desire to acknowledge the positive impact that houseplants can have on our well-being. These green companions not only add a splash of color to our homes but also purify the air by absorbing toxins. The day encourages people to recognize the joy and benefits of having houseplants in their lives.
Why Celebrate?
Houseplants offer a myriad of benefits. They improve air quality, reduce stress, and create a calming atmosphere. Plus, caring for them can be a rewarding and therapeutic experience. National Houseplant Appreciation Day is the perfect opportunity to take a moment to appreciate the beauty and contributions of these leafy wonders.
Are you not blessed with a “green thumb”? Out of a love for nature, do you hesitate to bring another houseplant home that will expire under your care? I certainly can relate to that concern! That was me, before I discovered the coleus plant (pictured above). This plant is phenomonally easy to care for even by the horticulturally challenged. Cuttings root in both dirt and water. They will droop to alert you they need to be watered. And depending on placement – sun or shade – the colors will lighten or deepen. Coleus grows phenomenally fast, so buy one and you will, in a fairly short time, if you desire, have a home filled with easy to care for houseplants!
Note: Coleus plants are not edible and should be kept out of reach of animals and children.
Ways to Honor and Celebrate:
- Learn About Your Plants: Take some time to understand the unique needs of your houseplants. Are they sun-lovers or shade-dwellers? Knowing more about your green buddies will help you care for them better.
- Get Creative with Potting: Give your plants a new home by repotting them in decorative containers. This not only freshens up their look but can also be a fun and creative activity for plant enthusiasts.
- Share the Love: Consider gifting a small houseplant to a friend or family member. It’s a thoughtful gesture that spreads the joy of having indoor greenery.
- Create a Plant Haven: Designate a special area in your home as a plant haven. Arrange your houseplants together to create a mini indoor garden, providing a lush and refreshing ambiance.
- Document Growth: Capture the growth of your plants with photos or a journal. It’s fascinating to see how they evolve over time, and documenting their journey can be a rewarding experience.
